Wow. No one with any opinions on Brian Blade. Hmmm.
I was just wondering what you think of Brian Blade. A friend and former drummer suggested I get two albums with him. Welcome to Life by Dave Binney and Perceptual by the Brian Blade Fellowship. They are in transit from Amazon so I have not heard any of his playing yet.

Honesty, i have been sick of jazz lately (i go through phases), however, i can ALWAYS listen to Brian. The CD you NEED, NEED, NEED to pick up is Joshua Redman's Spirit of the Moment: Live at the Village Vanguard. Brian shows why he is one of the hippest guys to come around in the last 20 years when it comes to straight-ahead.
Pick that one up... you can listen to it endlessly and it still shows you new things on every listen (and this is coming from someone who, as i said, is sick of jazz at the moment, but could listen to Brian ALL DAY).
Go get it!
Yes, here you go:

I like his work on Norah Jones's Come Away with Me. That was honestly the first time i ever heard him
However a friend of mine, saw him with Herbie Hancock in a Trio situation, and were clearly dissappointed about Blades' effort. but We all have bad days you know.
Check out Brian on Wayne Shorters' Footprints Live CD, just incredible playing.
Here are 2 vids from Drummerworld. The second clip with Wayne should float your boat!

I've seen brian blade twice with the following line ups:
Wayne Shorter
John Patitucci
Danilo Perez
and
Herbie Hancock
Wayner Shorter
Dave Holland
The first time the music and his playing was awesome but the second time the music seemed too abstract that it was just impossible to follow...but i definetely liked his playing the first time....great control over dynamics..

It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing.
Oh NO - another Jazz-Nazi!! J/K
[Actually, I love swing too...but if it grooves, & it's good, I like it all.]
Blade seems very unorthodox if you watch him [posture, grip, etc - to me anyways - but then I come from the VC, DW school - yeh, one of those folks ]...but then, what is orthodox?
Great player. A bit different w a unique sound & approach. We did extensive topics back a couple of times in here. Maybe it's still in "search[?]" I think skunk had it, above...
When I saw him w Shorter, Tooch, Perez, it was indeed very broken-up time & "avant-garde," but still great & advanced nonetheless. You really have to listen to hear the call-&-response - communication of what those guys were saying. Not everyone's cup, but a contempo-jazz or serious music enthusiast in general would def apprec it...
It was great, but after an hour it left me jonesin' a bit for a backbeat...which was then delivered quite nicely by John Staten of Karl Denson's Tiny Universe [jazz fest]...but Brian can deliver the BackBeat groove AW...It's in his initials, "BB" ;c)
Who BB's played w also says a lot...

I've seen Brian Blade play in the now defunct Smalls in NYC. He was backing a non-descript trio but his personality shone through. Otherwise, I've seen him with all the name acts. He's a killer when it comes to swing, despite the the appearance that he's a mannequin on a string. He's got a great, vintage notion of drumsounds and a superb concept of cymbal choice. I saw him with a 24" old A ride. Zildjian tells me they've delivered him some Ks. Whatever, he's got the touch.
